Turtle Dance (SOLD)
In the wilderness of New Mexico I have seen these wonderful Ornate Box Turtles sleeping stacked one atop the other. They often share territories, while simultaneously showing respect toward each other.  And you know the myth about Turtles being slow,  this is not true, they indeed are quite fast, and demonstrate great ability to hide quickly. I have heard my native cousins of the Tewa tribes talk about Mud turtles and the need for some people to have the  mud washed off  their back each spring, lest something negative befall you.  I have been a witness to such ceremonies in the Northern Pueblos of New Mexico when young toddlers are grabbed by the Kachinas and dipped in the freezing spring runoff.   My own backyard Ornate Turtles emerge in the spring with mud caked to their backs.  They are eager to walk under the micro-sprayers to be washed of the winters hibernation. If you are out in the desert, watch for them when the rains come. They love the feel of water on their backs.  Just as we ourselves appreciate a deep cleanse, whether at a spa, in our hot tubs at home or in a hot spring by the river.   Turtles bring the opportunity for newness and healing.

"Turtle Dance" has not yet been embellished with beads, just in case you want this as a gift for someone with a new born baby.  Upon request, I can embellish any of the turtle quilts with beads, buttons, or decorative threads depending on your need. Take a look at the emellishements  of  "Dance of the Nine Turtles".

Inspired by my backyard friends. I wait through the long winter to see if our Ornate Box turtles have survived the freezing temperatures and snowy nights.  This embellished quilt with its' snowy white background reminds me that  three feet below this snowy surface my turtles lie hibernating, waiting for the warmth of the soil to stimulate their awakening. OrnateTurtles struggle through the hard and crusty earth in search of food to fill their bellies.  Each of us in our own ways must figure out how to emerge from the long winter into the spring.  We also awaken in spring time with new dreams and ideas that keep ourselves replenished.
