“Art is not thinking something up; it’s the opposite- getting something down.”

"Red Pinwheels"
Floating on a sea of red. As a kid my 'most' favorite thing (not the best English), was blowing on pinwheels. Such an amazingingly simple toy, still less than $1.00, and gives hours of pleasure. Do you remember? I do. Running back and forth, and catching the wind just right. Trying to see just how fast I could blur the colors, or even just barely catching enough breeze to make it spin really, really slowly.
When I chose the colors for this quilt I was discouraged from picking red. "You won't be able to see the pinwheels,' I was advised. "The colors won't pop," said another. So, I made this quilt with a Coral background. Actually I made two of these quilts with a Coral background. I suffered through, and when I was all done with the piecing I carefully un-stitched, or as we like to call it, 'reverse sewing', until a nice neat pile of wedges sat on my sewing table. I put the pieces carefully away for about a year. In my mnd I was always searching for the right color red, and as you can see I finally found it.
"Yellow Pinwheels", below, is my compromise of colors that have a more traditional 'popping', but still using complimentary colors.

Yellow Pinwheels"
Floating on a sea of yellow.Take a close look at the floral border. This border is the same fabric that makes up the pinwheels that are floating on their resepctive backgrounds. This is a pattern which is sometimes called 'stack n' whack.' It is created through the layering of eight lengths of fabric, placed exactly one on top of the other and then cut into wedge shapes. These eight wedges are then sewed into a kaleidescope block. It takes a lot of patience, careful stitching and a mindfulness of being in the presence.
